We hope that you are all well and have been enjoing some of the activities that we have been sharing with your each week. Just a reminder, these are suggested activities and there is no expectation to complete them all or upload any photos. As Mrs.Harries said in her letter, please don’t put any extra pressure on yourself, your children are young and learning through play and talk is just what they need.
Y Ddraig Coch / The Red Dragon
Our
Welsh focus this week is 'dragons'. I'm sure lots of your little
ones already know that on our Welsh flag, you will find a giant red
dragon, 'Y Ddraig Coch'.The red dragon has been associated with Wales for hundreds of years and there are lots of stories/myths about it.
Amser Stori / Story Time
As we are learning about dragons this week, we have picked the perfect story all about a dragon called Zog. Click on the link below to hear Mrs.Dollman read 'Zog' by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
Can you talk about the story? You could pause the video at different points and talk more about what you can see in the pictures? Talk about what might happen next. What was your favourite part of the story?
Can you draw a picture of Zog?
Do you have any stories or information books about dragons or maybe doctors or knights? Share some picture books together and practise to hold the book correctly and turn each page carefully.
Our sound of the week is ' a'
Sound Hunt
Can you become a sound detective and find some things around your house that start with 'a'? You could take your sound hunt outside this week to see what else you could find.
Grown-ups, you could collect some objects/pictures that start with 'a' and play some games with these instead.
Play hide and seek with your objects. Ask a grown up to hide them around the house and give you some clues to help you find them or you could put your collection of objects/pictures in the middle of the table and a grown up describes one of them for you to guess. Maybe you could describe one too?
Writing 'a'
Can you practise to write the letter 'a'?
In RWI, we use a catchy phrase to help us remember how to write each sound. For the letter a, we say:
'Around the apple, down the leaf'
Have some fun practising with your finger. You could use shaving foam, paint or a shallow tray filled with something such as sand, rice or glitter. If you find 'a' tricky, practise to make circles in the same way.
Number Rhymes of the week
These rhymes start with 5.If your child is confident to 5, extend to 10.
This video has lots of number rhymes for you to enjoy. We would like you to see if you can learn '5 Little Monkey's rhyme' this week.
As we are learning about dragons, you could change the song just like this...
Have some fun using your toys to act out the number rhyme. Maybe you could become the doctor just like Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout and write down/make some squiggles for the number of monkeys you have left?

Last week, we looked at 2D shapes. Can you make a dragon using 2D shapes? What shapes will you use?

Make a dragon
Can you make your very own Welsh dragon? You could use anything you have in the house. Maybe build one with building blocks such as Duplo, you could use recycled materials such as egg boxes and kitchen roll tubes or maybe use a paper plate. Remember, your Welsh dragon must be red! Here are some ideas to help you:

Bubble Painting
Dragons like to breathe out fire. Zog tries so hard to 'blow' out his fire in the story. Can you practise to 'blow' by making a bubble painting? Click on the link below to find out how to do it:

This can be a messy activity, so make sure you cover the area well or maybe do it outside. Help your child to practise blowing through the straw before you put it into the paint to make sure they don't drink it!
You could make your bubble painting into the shape of a dragon's egg.
'Sticky Bodies' game
Look at a picture of the Welsh dragon and talk about the different parts of a dragon. You could use some words to describe them e.g. sharp claws, spiky back. Talk about our parts of the body. What are the same and what are different to the dragon?
This game should be played with a partner; a grown up or maybe an older brother or sister. Choose your favourite song to dance to. When the music stops, call out a body part e.g. feet. Can the 2 players stick their feet together? Repeat with other parts of the body such as hands, elbows, ears.

Enjoy the outdoors!
It's so important for us all to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, nothing beats it! Plus, there are so many wonderful opportunites waiting for you outside. Go for a walk and explore nature all around you. Look at the changes that Winter brings, can you find any of Jack Frost's icy patterns? Spring will soon be here, has anything started to grow yet? Collect some sticks to race in the river or simply pull on your wellies and find a puddle that makes the biggest splash!
